Israel’s expertise in high tech is well-known, and admired world-wide. Israel’s high-tech industry has experienced an unprecedented rate of growth beginning in the 1990s. Since 1995, many foreign firms have established research and development and production facilities in Israel including Motorola, Intel and others. Israel’s high level of technicians and engineers and closeness to European markets makes this country especially attractive. Israel has one of the highest rates of start-ups in the world and amazing sums of venture capital flow into the country every year. Many international firms have created a presence in Israel by their minority holdings in these Israeli start-up companies. The Israeli soft wear firm CHECK POINT has just been named to the Forbes 2000 list of largest companies in the world.
What drives Israelis to reach this extremely high level of achievement? In part Jewish culture has always valued education, and encouraged intellectual curiosity and powers of analysis. Israel continues that tradition today and produces outstanding scientists and inventors way out of proportion to its small size. Israel also leads the Middle East with the highest rate of PCs in private homes. There is a personal computer in nearly one out of two households, a ratio similar to that of the United States, Canada and a very few European and Far Eastern countries.
Israel is computer friendly and has the educated and innovative work force to continue to grow into an even stronger international high tech powerhouse in the future.
