Haifa, The mountain city by the sea! the name evokes for Israelis a green mountain, a modern harbor, remarkable beaches with golden sands and the blue Mediterranean sea. Haifa is often compared with San Francisco, for its hillside location and fantastic bay views. The city is filled with an abundance of varied scenery, colors, scents and flowers. Haifa is the one city in Israel where the people of four religions manage to live easily, pleasantly and peacefully together. Arab, Jew, Christian and Druze all intermingle, seemingly effortlessly.
The phrase “Haifa works, Jerusalem prays and Tel Aviv plays is a fairly accurate one. Haifa is a city of workers, with a large oil refinery, the oldest business park in Israel, and R & D facilities for a large number of Israeli and International hi-tech companies. The campus of the Haifa University is home to IMB Haifa Labs.
Haifa is a city of three levels, the lower part, which comprises the port and the industrial areas, the middle part, known as Hadar Ha Carmel…. “Hadar” means beauty, is the commercial centre and the peak of the mountain which is mainly residential.
The port of Haifa is large and very deep with the mountain range serving as a shield against storms. The port served as a gateway for hundreds of thousands of clandestine immigrants before the establishment of the State of Israel, and to this day it serves as Israel’s major port.
The jewel in the crown of Haifa is the Bahai Shrine Gardens. When you travel in Haifa - don't miss it. This is a World Heritage site and over half a million people visit each year. It is totally gorgeous with its 19 terraces extending up the northern slope of the Carmel Mountain. At its centre is the tomb of the founder of the Bahai religion. The gardens are tended by a team of dedicated gardeners and most of the work is done by hand, with small gardening tools! A fantastic feat.
