Jerusalem International Film Festival

July 9-19, 2009

The Jerusalem Cinematheque will once again be producing the most important international film festival in Israel from July 9-19 with 150-200 films to be screened at several venues around Jerusalem including, the Cinematheque, Beit Shmuel, The Begin Heritage Center, the Laboratory and the Smadar. The Festival will open with the traditional presentation at the Sultan’s Pool outdoor theater with the Walls of the Old City of Jerusalem as a backdrop.

The first Jerusalem International Film Festival took place in May 1984 with over 100 films screened including the best international offerings and Israeli premiers. That year the guests included Lillian Gish of silent film fame, Jeanne Moreau and Warren Beatty.

Throughout the 1980’s the festival developed its signature format and today lasts for 10 days during the summer. The showings are divided into categories including Panorama-for international feature films, Documentary films, films highlighting the Jewish experience, and this year the Spirit of Freedom-for exploring the questions of freedom and human rights. In addition there will be screenings of new television dramas, works by new directors and of course Israeli films. The festival includes the awarding of the prestigious Wolgin Prizes for the best Israeli films.

The Jerusalem International Film Festival has been growing and branching out with a wider cinematic reach. It is one of the few events that showcases the finest contemporary international cinematic trends to local audiences from film buffs to professional events for the local movie-making industry. The public can enjoy presentations at the open-air Sultan’s pool, and innovative, controversial and avant-garde works. Originally a small intimate event today’s  wide variety of events has turned the Festival into the most important cinematic gathering in Israel. There is something for everyone at the Jerusalem Film Festival!
