Israel Bird Watching

Hundreds of millions of birds fly across Israel’s skies twice a year, heading to Africa in the fall and back to Europe for the spring mating season. This amazing natural phenomenon makes bird watching in Israel a major attraction for both professional and amateur birders, nature photographers, scientists and naturalists.
Birdwatching in Israel has spawned an entire tourism sector devoted to the enjoyment and study of our feathered friends. During the migration seasons the main birdwatching sites hold numerous special events and activities for bird lovers of all levels. From Lake Hula in the Upper Galilee to Kfar Rupin in the Jordan Valley, and continuing south to Jerusalem, the Arava and Eilat birdwatching in Israel centers offer guided tours of habitats, hiking along the birds’ migration paths, and watching the birds through telescopes. Learning experiences include lectures on ornithology, documentary films on bird migration, bird photography workshops and even working with professionals to tag birds for research. Serious birders can visit Tel Aviv University’s International Center for the Study of Bird Migration at Latrun where the researchers use radar to track the movements of the birds. Birdwatching in Israel is an unforgettable experience for bird lovers from all over the globe as they come to watch the cranes, falcons, eagles, wagtails, pelicans and  hundreds of additional species on their semi-annual visit to one of the world’s birding “superpowers”-Israel.
