Desert Getaway

Since the first prime minister of Israel, David Ben Gurion, declared the importance of the Negev Desert to the future of the State of Israel and moved to a Negev kibbutz, Israelis have been busily building and developing this vast tract of land, more than half of Israel’s area.
Today the Negev offers every visitor fabulous opportunities for a dream vacation. Hiking or biking the spectacular desert trails, touring the ancient craters by jeep, relaxing under the desert stars in the sublime quiet of the desert, exploring the mysterious settlements of the Nabateans,  or enjoying hands-on experiences with innovative Negev farmers-the possibilities are endless.
A good place to begin a desert adventure is the Mitzpe Ramon Visitors center located on the edge of the Ramon Crater. Here visitors can view a multi-media production about the natural wonders of the area, see models of the Negev craters, become acquainted with the history of the area and the flora and fauna that flourish in the arid climate. Marvel at the spectacular view from the observation deck. The Ramon Inn is a unique hotel converted from a residential complex offering apartment style rooms, a fabulous lobby with a cozy atmosphere surrounding the fireplace. Home-cooked lavish meals and expert advice on desert touring are at your fingertips. Explore the Albert promenade, with its unique environmental sculptures, and Bio Ramon a demonstration of the interdependence of the desert’s plants and animals. Bring the whole family to the Alpaca farm where visitors can feed the animals by hand.
A visit to the area would not be complete without a taste of Bedouin culture. These desert tribes offer traditional hospitality, “haflot”-desert feasts complete with haunting music and storytelling, camel treks and overnights in tents or rustic huts. Kfar Hanokdim and Mamshit offer visitors an authentic experience and chances to learn about this ancient way of life.
Along Israel’s southern coast at Nitzana, visitors can combine biking with ecological education, art and sculpture with ancient and modern history in the land of Israel. Not to be missed is the amazing solar park. A stop at the memorial to the Hebrew fighting woman reminds us of the price of peace and freedom.
After taking in the spectacular desert scenery in shades of brown, orange dusty purple, gray, and beige head south to Israel’s jewel on the Red Sea-Eilat with its beautiful blue waters. Active visitors can hike the famous “Colored Canyon” where layers of  sandstone in a myriad of colors delight the eye.

Enjoy the enchanting tranquility and exciting adventures in Israel’s desert paradise!
