The economic, cultural and academic capital of Israel-Tel Aviv will celebrate its 100th anniversary beginning in April 2009.
Tel Aviv, the first Hebrew city of the modern age was founded on April 11, 1909 and expanded rapidly as waves of immigration from Europe arrived in the 1920s and 30s. Tel Aviv's fame as the region's most creative, liberal and tolerant city in Israel was enhanced when Jaffa joined the Tel Aviv municipality in 1949. Since then the city has flourished becoming Israel's business and cultural center with a unique atmosphere that fuses Mediterranean and urban elements.
The celebration encompasses a wide variety of events reflecting Tel Aviv’s special character and flavor. The events will include outdoor festivals, art shows, sporting competitions and historical exhibitions. Celebrations will kick-off in early April, 100 years to the date of the city's founding 100 years ago, and continuing throughout 2009.
Tel Aviv is known for its vibrant and lively atmosphere, cultural events and the Bauhaus-style architecture recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Today Tel Aviv-Yafo is a growing global city with a population of 400,000.
A gala celebration opened the centennial events in Rabin Square on April 4 which featured a 360° rotating sound and light show, a concert by the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by maestro Zubin Mehta, and performances by prominent vocalists and actors. Stay tuned! Lots more to come.
