All about Rosh Pina

Gai Oni was the first modern Jewish settlement in the Galilee and was founded in 1878. However it was abandoned after three years of drought. In 1882 a group of Romanian Jews built the first lasting settlement in the Galilee and named it Rosh Pina. In 1884 it became the first Jewish settlement to come under the patronage of Baron Edmond de Rothschild who made it the administrative center for his holdings. Rosh Pina is the site where ancient Jewish Kabba Rosh Pina lah tradition says that the Messiah will appear at the end of the world, it is a highly visited city with plenty to see and explore. Rosh Pina hotels have a style of their own they are usually small and intimate with an extra attention to the guests satisfaction. Arabs from neighboring villages frequently attacked Jewish traffic near the town. In 1938 Shlomo Ben Yosef, a Betar youth member, took part in a retaliatory attack. He was captured by British Officers and became the first freedom fighter hung by the British. Rosh Pina residents honored his memory by setting up a monument in the local cemetery.

For visitors to Rosh Pina and the surrounding area, there is a small airport welcoming daily flights from Tel Aviv (just 30 minute flight).

Places to See in Rosh Pina

The House of Dignitaries is a structure build in 1882 and is now used as the administration and finance center for Rosh Pina and other towns in the Galilee region.   A loudspeaker was used from this building to broadcast the local news.

Attractions built by Baron de Rothschild include a garden of flowers and plants imported in 1886 from France. The garden is on an incline and at the top is a very intimate and rustic restaurant.

Visit Prof. Gideon Mer's home, which is now a museum, where he conducted research on malaria.  The site became a world-renowned research center for malaria. There is a room dedicated to his memory and an exhibit of ancient items from different periods.  The Rosh Pina archives can be found here.

On Founders Street the original buildings have been restored.  Wander through the cobbled streets and visit the artist and craft shops and studios.   There are also shops selling local made produce, e.g. jams, cheese, etc.

Rosh Pina's original synagogue was commissioned by Baron de Rothschild and built in 1882.   The synagogue has been renovated and is used on a daily basis by the Chabad Organization.

The Rosh Pina Academy, Yad Yigal Allon, shows Rosh Pina as an agricultural colony from the end of the nineteenth century, its stone-paved streets, and its original houses.  The tour includes an audiovisual presentation on its history, nature, landscape.  It also includes entry to buildings, among them the old synagogue, and to the Rosh Pina Cemetery. Visitors can continue to the springs in the riverbed of Nahal Rosh Pina, in which there is a water system from the time of Baron Edmond de Rothschild and the remains of ancient agriculture.
